Comment There are two
distinct variants of the Pattern 1 button, one with coarse
lettering and one with fine lettering; the former may be an
earlier type, but this is mere speculation.
Thanks to John Burford for confirming - from photographs in
his own collection and memorabilia on display at
Swadlincote Pottery Museum - that staff of the tramway were
issued with the standard Midland Railway 'wyvern' pattern
button. Although I have as yet been unable to confirm that
staff were issued with London, Midland and Scottish Railway
company buttons (Pattern 2) following the 1923 railway
'grouping', I would be very surprised if this were not to
have been the case.
